Overview
A concept based on the Geordie word ‘Canny’ that provides a chance for industry to shop for their next Designer. Cans of baked beans replace standard business cards, showcasing each persons individuality. Giving industry ‘a taste of what we’re made of!’.

Research
The student panel discussion highlighted a preference for a fun, industry-focused approach. There are over 200 universities and more than 3,000 designers exhibiting at the New Designers exhibition. New Designers is the UK’s most important event for emerging design. It serves as a focal point for top design graduates from across the nation to connect with industry professionals, employers, buyers, the media, trend forecasters, and a design-hungry public.

Successful graduate branding is specific to the cohort, including factors like location and personality. “Canny” is a Geordie word that means good, nice, or lovely. It can also mean “very.” For example, you might describe someone as a “canny lad” or a “canny lass” to mean they are a nice guy or a lovely girl.
Strategy
The degree show needed to work for our exhibition in Newcastle, be easily transported, and translate well for the New Designers exhibition. As our cohort was known for being “full of beans,” it made sense to create a memorable takeaway for the industry by combining the play on words of “Canny” with a can of baked beans, using it as a business card. This demonstrated our craft and flair through redesigning the packaging to highlight each person’s individuality, incorporating changes in stickers, ingredients, values, and a barcode that links to their portfolio. The weight of the beans is something hard to forget.

Since the Northumbria degree shows are set out in aisles, it made sense to extend the idea of selling and advertising oneself to professionals by replicating a supermarket shopping experience. The show was designed to be fun, vibrant, and memorable.
Design
The design needed to be youthful, vibrant, fun, and colourful, taking references from bright supermarket advertising, signage, stickers and packaging.
The “Canny” logo mark ties together the ribbon of graduation and the emblem used on the packaging, often hinting at its heritage and certification.
